DEFINITION
Under the supervision of the Maintenance
Foreman performs varied skilled and semi-skilled duties relating to the
maintenance and upkeep of District facilities, the operation and maintenance of
field equipment and in connection with construction work.
TYPICAL TASKS
Performs pipeline and canal maintenance
and repair work; removes debris; cuts, burns or sprays undergrowth or other
objectionable material, cleans and repaints facilities; services and maintains
flow meters, valves and fittings. Repairs pipeline leaks; operates
maintenance and construction equipment such as compressors, backhoe, spray
equipment, portable and towable equipment such as pumps and generators, etc.;
installs and removes meters, valves and piping. Does other related work
as assigned.
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE AND
ABILITIES
Able to learn all rules
and skills necessary to be certified for possession of a California Class A Drivers License with endorsements for trailers and HAZMAT.
General knowledge of
skills relating to maintenance work. Able to learn operation and maintenance of equipment
used in the work, repairs of meters, valves, etc. Able
to understand working instructions and field manuals and to follow directions.
One year experience in
jobs requiring mechanical aptitude.
Related education and experience may be substituted for each other on a year
for year basis. Basic knowledge of small equipment used in the construction
industry. Ability to read and understand written instructions provided for
field applications concerning equipment and materials, such as machine
procedure instructions, and mixing rates for materials, and to follow
directions. Ability to effectively cooperate with fellow
employees and others.
Able to work in confined spaces, such as
pipeline interiors and piping manifolds 27 inch or greater.
Traverse uneven ground (e.g. farm
fields) and construction work areas while lifting and/or carrying equipment and
tools up to 60 pounds in temperatures of 20o – 110o F.
Regularly
work in safety sensitive areas alone or with others e.g. operation of heavy
equipment requiring a Class A license, application of chemicals to water
supplies, work in excavation areas or confined spaces, work
on and around cranes. Regularly work without a direct supervisor on site.
Employee is subject to call out and work operations during swing and graveyard
shifts to respond to emergencies.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (PHYSICAL):

Vision or corrected vision within normal
ranges to be able read documents, reports and maps.
2.
Physical ability to:
a.
work effectively on day, swing, or
graveyard shifts (and occasionally longer as overtime work demands dictate) on
a daily basis;
b.
operate motor vehicles requiring a Class
A California Driver’s License;
c.
standing and walking on an extended
basis;
d.
work
at facilities with uneven ground;
e.
lifting
and/or carrying equipment and tools up to 60 pounds;
f.
stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb during field
maintenance and repair work
g.
perform prolonged duties in temperatures of 20o – 110o
F.
h.
enter tanks, pipelines and manifolds via
20” diameter access openings

able to work in confined spaces, such as
pipeline interiors and piping manifolds 27 inch or greater.
3.
Hearing or corrected hearing within
normal range to be able to communicate with others by use of telephone or in
person.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (DUTIES):
1.
Perform varied work relating to water
systems maintenance including repair of water distribution pipelines, opening
and closing valves, and installing turnouts.
2.
Performs a variety
of maintenance and repair on water distribution systems, valves, manifolds and
lines.
3.
Operates heavy
equipment such as backhoes, loaders, dump trucks and cranes.
4.
Shuts down
main-lines in emergencies.
5.
Perform additional related duties as
assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education
equivalent to completion of twelfth grade, or completion of a trade school or
apprenticeship course in related Maintenance fields. Experience will be evaluated for
equivalency comparisons for the above educational requirements.
Speech
sufficient to clearly communicate with others in English. Ability to read and
comprehend English. Vision or corrected vision within normal ranges to
be able to read instructions, documents and maps.
Health and physical
ability to achieve medical certification to possess a California Class A Drivers License.
Willingness to work
irregular hours in periods of emergency or heavy work load.
